A double explosion occurred on Wednesday at one of the busiest parts of Kano with scores believed to have been killed in the attack.
The twin blast occurred simultaneously at the popular Alarama Shopping Complex by Filling Paki located in the Kano Kantin Kwari Market at the heart of the ancient city.
Details of the blasts and the casualty figure are not known yet, but security agencies have detailed officials to the scene at the time of this report.
Residents of the area and security officials have confirmed the incident saying many residents died from the attacks which occurred around 3.45pm.
Currently, the state governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, a candidate for the presidential primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC), is in Lagos with other aspirants on the party’s platform for the exercise.
The attack is coming just days after a similar attack in a major mosque in the city led to the death of over 120 people. Some watchers had suggested then that the bombing of the mosque was provoked by by the The emir, Muhammad Sanusi II’s call on civilians in the attack prone areas of the country to “defend themselves”.
This is not the first time Kantin Kwari market, regarded as the largest textile market in the country, would suffer such a terrible blow. In December 2012, four people were injured when a bomb went off outside a mosque near the market; in 2010, an overnight fire outbreak had also razed the market destroying over 400 shops and properties worth billions of naira.
