Suleiman Abba, the acting inspector-General of Police, was Tuesday confirmed by the Council of State to take the full robe of the Nigerian Inspector-General of Police.

His elevation is coming amid controversy trailing his withdrawal of security aides of the Speaker of the country’s House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, after the latter defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

His confirmation was stamped at a Council of State meeting on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The meeting was presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan while those who attended were former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Shehu Shagari; former Head of State, retired General Yakubu Gowon; and former Head of the Interim National Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan.

Meanwhile, Abba has commissioned the first batch of the Close Protection Unit for judicial officers and judges trained by operatives of the Royal Military Police of the British Army.

The IGP in his address admonished the grandaunts to employ professionalism, discipline and courage in the discharge of their duties.

He added that this Close Protection Unit has become necessary to reassure judges; especially the ones handling terrorism related cases of adequate Police protection, to enable them discharge their duties without fear.

Abba used the occasion to thank the British Government and also to sought greater collaboration in areas of capacity building and intelligence sharing.

The occasion was attended by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador Andrew Pocock, and other senior staff of the British High Commission, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Abuja, Justice Ibrahim Auttah and top officers of the Nigeria Police Force.
