Year 2015 is 730 days away and Nigeria’s incumbent president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan is yet to deliver on his 2011 election promises, yet posters soliciting a second term for the underachieving president have been littering the streets of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.
But in a surprising twist, the president, who had engaged in covert machinations ahead of the 2015 polls, has not only disclaimed the posters but also described the brains behind them as working only for themselves and not him or his agents.
Posters in the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja campaigning for his reelection in 2015 do not have any links to him, President Goodluck Jonathan said on Wednesday.
The president not only disclaimed the posters but described the brains behind them as working only for themselves and not him or his agent
According to Dr. Reuben Abati, the special adviser to the president on media and publicity, the president’s only attention for the moment is delivering on his mandate for Nigerians. He said the president would not allow himself to be distracted by the politics of 2015.
“Those pasting the posters are trying to express their own view,” Abati said. “The president has stated that he will talk about the presidency from 2014. Those doing these do not have the consent of the president … what is most important now is for the president to deliver on his electioneering promise to Nigerians and not to embark on the pasting of posters.”
Abati again emphasised his earlier point, saying: “It has not come from the president. Nigerians should take the president for his word and ignore any other information to the contrary.”
