The National Universities Commission (NUC) has said that only 58 of the total number of universities in Nigeria have approval to run postgraduate programmes
The commission expressed concern that a lot of tertiary institutions are currently awarding post-graduate degrees against approval and warned the public and prospective students against patronising institutions awarding such illegal degrees in its just published bulletin, listing the 58 institutions with approval for such degrees.
The statement read: “The National Universities Commission (NUC) has observed with great concern that some Nigerian universities are running unapproved postgraduate programmes, leading to the award of Masters and PhD degrees.
“The Commission has also observed that some Parastatals and Institutes are awarding these same Postgraduate degrees, either on their own or through unapproved affiliations with Nigerian and foreign Universities.
“Such practices are not only unethical, but also antithetical to time-tested quality assurance best practices.”
NUC warned that qualifications or awards resulting from such institutions are not recognised. It maintained that only postgraduate certificates from the listed universities are valid for employment, further studies and other purposes.
