The Enugu State House of Assembly has impeached the state’s Deputy Governor, Sunday Onyebuchi.
The Assembly voted Onyebuchi out of office on Tuesday for reasons that are yet to be made public.
However, it is widely speculated that the impeachment was orchestrated by Governor Sullivan Chime.
Recall that the Assembly had earlier accused Onyebuchi of operating a commercial poultry at his official residence and of disobeying Governor Chime, charges that ordinarily do not call for a punishment as severe as impeachment under the law.
During hearing of the charges, Onyebuchi had told the impeachment panel set up by the state’s chief judge that Chime too operated a piggery at the Government House, producing evidence before the panel last Wednesday.
Onyebuchi also said the governor home farm had been hurriedly evacuated shortly after the panel commenced sitting. He revealed that the state government have been including the maintenance of the governor’s farm in its budget since 2011.
Onyebuchi had tendered the state’s budget between 2011 and 2014 and pointed to funds that had always been provided for the poultry he operated. He insisted that he did not commit any offence that should calls for impeachment and that the poultry farms he and the governor were operating were there before they assumed office in 2007.-
