Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Tuesday held a close-door meeting with Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, in his home in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
Tambuwal said it was just a routine visit.
It is speculated that the meeting is connected with the forthcoming general elections in the country.
It has been widely rumoured that Tambuwal has been under pressure to contest for the presidency and has reportedly been wooed by the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).
Obasanjo claims to remain the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) despite resigning as chairman, Board of Trustees of the party and writing a damning open letter to President Goodluck Jonathan in which he accused the president of various infractions.
Neither Obasanjo nor Tambuwal spoke with journalists after the meeting, but Imam Imam, the spokesman of the Speaker explained that it was a normal routine visit.
“It was just a meeting to rub minds with baba,” Imam said referring to Obasanjo.
He noted that the former president is a father figure to all Nigerians and an elder-statesman.
“The same way we do meet with other stakeholders, the Speaker went to confer with Baba and rub minds together as part of our legislative mandate,” Imam said.
