A dastardly attack on a church in Northern Nigeria during a midnight mass on Christmas Eve has resulted in the death of at least six people, including pastor of the church.

After opening gunfire on worshippers inside the church in Peri Village in Potiskum, Yobe State, the gangsters went ahead to set the building ablaze.

According to eyewitnesses, the group of gunmen entered the village deep in the night and headed straight for the church.

One resident said they shot randomly at the congregation, killing the pastor and five other worshippers; and setting the church ablaze.

Another resident said a branch of the Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA) was targetted. As at the time of filing this report, the Police had not made an official statement on the attack.

However, suspicion immediately falls on the Boko Haram Islamist sect, which has a habit of masterminding gruesome attacks against government, security agencies and Christians, particularly on their major celebrations, such as today’s Christmas.
