Following a motion moved by Honourable Ibrahim Gusau, the Federal House of Representatives has invited Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar; Minister of Defence, retired Lt.-Gen. Aliyu Gusau; and National Security Adviser, retired Col. Sambo Dasuki to give their accounts on the security situation in the country.

The House summoned the trio on Tuesday and saddled them with the responsibility of finding and arresting the suspected Fulani herdsmen perpetrating vicious attacks in Zamfara and Nasarawa States.

The House charged the security bosses to arrest the suspect in order to serve as a deterrent to others who may have such evil plans.

Moving the motion for the resolution to summon the security Chiefs, Gusau said hundreds of gunmen operated in a certain community in Zamfara, shooting for about four hours and killing children, traders and community leaders.

He referred to similar incidents that happened in Benue and Nasarawa, where several people were killed by people believed to be Fulani herdsmen.

Gusau lamented that residents of the communities now live in constant fear of being attacked while many have fled their homes.

He expressed surprise at the sophistication and coordination of the attackers, saying that they have become so organised and daring that small units of security personnel would not be strong enough to stop them.

“These groups of attackers are becoming more coordinated and if not checked, they can turn into yet another organised terror group”, Gusau said.

He noted that 230 people were killed in two villages in Zamfara on 3rd and 5th April alone.

Following another motion moved by Honourable Mohammed Onawo from Nasarawa State, the House charged its Committees on Works and Army to investigate the circumstances delaying the construction of military barracks in Doma, Nasarawa State.

Onawo revealed that N100m was earmarked for the construction of the Doma Military Barracks in the 2014 budget, wondering why the contract for the project has not been awarded.

He noted that the essence of the project was to improve security conditions in the area and its environs, including Guma, Gwer West and Agatu in Benue.

He held that if urgent measure was not taken to promptly execute the project, its essence may be defeated.

“The appropriated funds may be wasted if action is not taken by the parliament to ensure the timely implementation of the project”, Onawo said.
