President Goodluck Jonathan has restated his administration’s commitment to rid the country of terrorism.
He gave the assurance on Tuesday while making remarks at the commissioning of the new Nigeria Police Force International Peacekeeping Centre and Force Museum at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
According to the president, terrorism and insurgencies are the bane of progress in the nation.
He therefore tasked the Police to handle their mandate without fair or favour, in order to achieve the dream of a terror-free Nigeria. He also acknowledged the sad reality that Nigerians now live in a changing time where unprecedented violence and criminal acts occur every day.
“Terrorists acts and insurgencies are inimical to our progress. Our dear country has unfortunately experienced this odious development. We are determined to confront them and checkmate crime in our society”, Jonathan said.
“It is imperative that the Nigeria Police Force, as the lead agency in the maintenance of internal security, play an active role in combating terror and providing security for our people. This is the major and compelling role of the police today”.
He expressed confidence that the Police will be alive to the responsibility, while assuring the force and Nigerians that everything will be done to fully support them.
“Our people must live without fear”, the president asserted. “Let me use this unique opportunity to appreciate the commitment and the services the security services have been rendering to this country in spite of the challenges we have”.
He added that although not all Nigerians appreciate huge sacrifices and commitment the Army, the Police and the State Security Service make every day, he does appreciate them.
“I know what they have been doing and I believe God being with us, we will overcome challenges,” Jonathan assured.
