Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi has distributed cheques totalling N160 million to 160 First Class graduates of the state origin who made the grade between 2006 and 2013.
At the ceremony where each of them got N1m, Obi noted that the reward was to promote healthy competition and motivate other students to strive towards excellence.
Obi, who presented the cheques at Ekwueme Square, Awka, also distributed N40m to 400 youths trained in various skills. According to the governor, each of the 400 youths would receive N100,000 to start a source of livelihood and become self-reliant.
The governor also distributed 55 buses to public and mission schools, and two fully-equipped fire-fighting trucks to the state fire service out of the six trucks ordered for the agency.
In addition, the governor flagged off the distribution of 200 transformers to various communities, bringing the number of transformers distributed by this administration to over 1000.
In his Speech, the governor thanked the people of the state for support given to his administration to deliver its vision and urged them to give similar cooperation to the incoming administration of Chief Willie Obiano to excel.
Commissioner for education, Dr. Uju okeke in her address said Governor Obi’s administration has fully delivered on its promises and even surpassed targeted expectations in transforming the education sector.
Also speaking, Commissioner for Public Utilities, Water Resources and Community Development, Mr. Emeka Nwankwu said the transformers would go a long way in improving the electricity power supply situation in communities, and stimulate economic activates to improve the income and social wellbeing of the people.
Mr. Nwankwu explained that in addition to fire-fighting trucks and equipment given to Fire Service, six new fire stations were being constructed at strategic location of Nnewi, Ihiala, Agulu, Umunze, Onitsha and Agulu.
Acting Director State Fire Service, Mr. Anthony Ikezue said the governor was the first to give such support to the Agency and affirmed that the intervention would enhance their operations.
