After many months of public outcry towards his controversial style of policing, Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu has finally been redeployed. Twelve other officers were similarly redeployed.

Announcing his redeployment on Thursday, the Police Service Commission (PSC) explained that the redeployment was in line with the recommendation of Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Abubakar.

Mbu was replaced with Commissioner of Police in charge of Special Fraud Investigation Unit in Lagos, Mr. Tunde Ogunsakin.

Also affected by the redeployment are Ambrose Aisabo, who is now Commissioner in charge of Kwara State; Felix Uyanya, who is now Commissioner for Ekiti State; and Abdulmajid Ali, who is now Imo State Commissioner of Police.

Benjamin Onwuka is new Commissioner of Police in charge of Kebbi State, Ibrahim Maishanu goes to Osun State as Commissioner of Police; Adamu Ibrahim goes to Abia in similar capacity; and Adenrele Shinaba goes to Katsina State Command as Commissioner as well.

Umaru Shehu leaves Nasarawa for Kaduna as Commissioner of Police, A. J. Abakasanga is now in charge of Adamawa State Command; while Kalafite Adeyemi and Ibrahim Idris have been moved from the Force Headquarters, Abuja to Taraba and Nasarawa States respectively as Commissioners of Police.

“The Police Service Commission has approved the recommendations of the Inspector General of Police for the redeployment of thirteen (13) Commissioners of Police to various Commands nationwide”, read a statement signed by Ferdinand Ukpe on behalf of PSC.

“The Chairman of the Commission, Sir Mike Mbama Okiro, equally admonished the newly redeployed officers to put in their best in their various Commands’ operations, so as to provide a secure environment for business and life to thrive”.

Mbu has constantly been the subject of media spotlighting since last year over particularly sticky situations that played out while he served as Police Commissioner in Rivers State. He has been at loggerheads with Governor of the state, Rotimi Amaechi, and has been alleged to be working for President Goodluck Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a pawn in Amaechi’s administration.

He banned all forms of political rallies within the state, and proscribed activities of some organizations, such as the Grassroots Development Initiative, Save Rivers Movement, and the Rivers Leadership Advancement Foundation.

The Police in Rivers, under Mbu’s watch, was accused of shooting rubber bullets at Senator Magnus Abe during a rally by a group loyal to Amaechi and the All Progressives Congress (APC) — an action that further reinforced widespread belief that the Police in the state had become partisan.
