Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Gambo Sallau has resigned from the coveted position, saying he is unwilling to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) with the majority of his colleagues.

The former speaker took the decision following the defection of 27 members of the House yesterday. In order to avoid impeachment since the APC now takes majority seats in the House, Sallau resigned. Currently, the APC has 33 out of 40 members in the House.

Following the speaker’s resignation, Deputy Speaker, Isyaku Danja, who was one of the defectors, has assumed the seat.

The lawmakers had defected to the APC on Monday; and in a letter containing their names, they said their decisions followed consultations with their constituents.

Those who defected include the deputy speaker; Majority Leader, Hamisu Ibrahim; his deputy, Yusuf Babangida; Chief Whip Abdullahi Iliyasu Yaryasa; and former Speaker of the House, Yusuf Abdullahi Falgore.
