Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja, venue of the international colloquium on the Freedom of Information (FoI) Act that was to be hosted by Dino Melaye’s Anti-Corruption Network (ACN), has been sealed by a detachment of heavily armed policemen.
Themed Demystifying the Complexities — Empowering the People, the maiden International Colloquium on Freedom of Information Act, 2011 was to hold at the hotel on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“Speakers are coming from London, United States of America and South Africa”, Melaye said of the programme”, Executive Secretary of ACN and former member of the House of Representatives, Melaye had said last week ahead of the programme.
“The programme is going to be certificated and it is free. We want to raise public enlightenment on the Act. We want to use the FoI Act to fight corruption”.
But policemen in Hilux patrol van with registration number NPF 6673 C were seen at the gate of the hotel and at other strategic positions in the premises on Tuesday.
They chained and padlocked the doors leading to the hall, while also barricading the inner doors leading to the venue, removing the chairs and event banners already set up in the hall.
Participants who arrived early for the event could not hide their disappointment in the Police, while Melaye vowed to sue both the Police and the management of Nicon.
