Fraudsters have hacked into the email account of the Nigerian Army, and have begun using it to solicit funds from unsuspecting Nigerians, including journalists.

“It has come to the notice of the Directorate that some fraudsters are using our official e-mail to circulate messages seeking for financial assistance from the public. This Directorate wishes to dissociate itself from such embarrassing message,” the Army authorities said in a statement signed by Col John Agim.

It appealed to members of the public, particularly the media to clarify all information from the Nigerian Army Headquarters when in doubt.

One of the fraudster’s e-mail sent from DAPR official e-mail address was titled, I NEED YOUR HELP and requested for N83,000.

“Good morning, I’m so sorry to bother you on this. I just heard that my younger sister was involved in an accident en route Kogi and she needs to be operated urgently and the hospital is demanding for about N83,000 before they commence the surgery, and I understand she is in a very bad state. I can’t meet up the urgency from here. Please, I beg of you to assist me on this? I will refund you as soon as I get back. I can send the doctor’s acct details to you if you can help me! Pls email me back pls.” The message read.
