The Rivers State House of Assembly has begun an impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara days after speculations and confirmation by some members that the latter would be removed from office.

The lawmakers officially served a notice of ‘gross misconduct’ on the Governor on Monday. The State’s Deputy Governor, Ngozi Odu, also got a notice.

The notice dated Friday, March 14, 2025, said the action of the lawmakers was in accordance with the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution.

“In compliance with Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and other applicable laws, we, the undersigned members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, hereby present a Notice of Gross Misconduct by the Deputy Governor of Rivers State in the exercise of her official duties,” the notice stated.

Huhuonline.com is aware that the lawmakers loyal to the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, are currently compiling a list of what they call ‘gross misconduct’ as the impeachment process is set to start fully.

“We are compiling his sins and Nigerians will soon know all his atrocities in office. These gross misconducts will be published in major newspapers for all to see so that nobody will blame us,” one of the lawmakers told our correspondent on the phone.

Asked if the impeachment move was an instruction from Wike, the lawmaker said: “first, count our leader out of this. Nigerians are aware of what we passed through in the hands of the Governor before the Supreme Court rescued us.

“If you say it is an instruction from the Minister, we don’t care. The question should be whether he committed those infractions.”

The lawmaker further said one of the alleged sins of Fubara is that he has continued to spend Rivers funds even though he has not officially received the permission of the House of Assembly.

“We asked him to present the budget so he could have a soft landing, but instead, he had politicized this by trying to make the world see him as the victim.

“Nobody is after his job. What we are particular about is that the Governor and all political office holders must do the right thing,” he said.

He said at this stage, it would be difficult for any form of mediation as the Assembly had exhausted all avenues to get the Governor to act right.

Calls and messages to the media office of the Governor were neither taken or responded to at the time of this report.
