Lagos State has once again proven its mettle as the cultural and economic heartbeat of Nigeria, reaping an astounding $71.6 million in revenue during the 2024 Detty December festivities. This phenomenal achievement underscores the immense potential of leveraging tourism, arts, and culture to drive economic growth and global recognition. During this season of unparalleled vibrancy, hotels alone accounted for a significant $44 million, with short-let apartments contributing over $13 million. These numbers reflect the state’s positioning as a premier destination city. The success of Detty December not only highlights Lagos’ economic potential but also serves as an exemplary blueprint for other states and the federal government.

A Celebration of Culture and Economic Triumph

From dazzling music concerts to innovative fashion shows, the Detty December calendar was a spectacular showcase of Nigeria’s rich heritage and contemporary creativity. Signature events like the Greater Lagos Fiesta, Mrs. Universe Africa, African Fashion Week, and Rhythm Unplugged drew massive crowds of locals, diaspora members (popularly known as IJGBs—I Just Got Back), and international tourists eager to experience Lagos’ unique energy. The Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mr. Idris Aregbe, highlighted the profound cultural and economic impact of these festivities. According to him, tourism remains a vital driver of growth and preservation in Lagos, with the “Ember” season exemplifying unity, vibrancy, and celebration.

Lagos: A Global Cultural Hub

Detty December has become more than a festive period; it is now a global platform that showcases Nigerian arts, culture, and music. By fostering community spirit, strengthening diaspora ties, and positioning Lagos as a cultural tourism hub, the initiative is transforming the city into a beacon of innovation and tradition. The diversity of events—spanning culinary experiences, Spotify Wrapped Concerts, the La Vida Experience, and cultural exhibitions—illustrates the government’s commitment to creating unforgettable experiences for all. These initiatives not only enrich the cultural landscape but also catalyze economic opportunities across various sectors.

Visionary Leadership Driving Success

The success of Detty December is a testament to the visionary leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat. Their dedication to fostering tourism and culture has laid a robust foundation for these achievements. Mr. Aregbe commended their efforts, noting that the “resilience and ingenuity of Lagosians” remain at the heart of the state’s success. The Lagos State Government’s collaborative approach—welcoming innovative ideas and partnerships—was instrumental in the season’s triumph. Industry stakeholders, performers, and artisans played pivotal roles, their creativity and participation vital in positioning Lagos as the tourism and entertainment capital of Africa.

A Blueprint for the Future

As Lagos looks ahead to 2025 with the “Lagos Tourism is Rising” campaign, the government is committed to building on this momentum. Lessons from Detty December will inform future initiatives, ensuring more opportunities for residents while solidifying Lagos’ standing as a beacon of cultural and economic excellence. The achievements of Detty December underscore a simple yet powerful truth: tourism is a transformative force. By celebrating its rich cultural tapestry, Lagos has created an enduring legacy that other states and the federal government can emulate. The success of this initiative calls for a nationwide embrace of tourism as a driver of economic growth and cultural preservation.

Gratitude and Forward Momentum

Mr. Aregbe expressed heartfelt gratitude to the people of Lagos, industry players, and every individual who contributed to the success of Detty December. Their collective efforts have set a high standard for tourism and cultural initiatives across Africa. As the Lagos State Government continues to champion innovation and inclusivity, Detty December stands as a shining example of what is possible when tradition meets creativity. It’s not just a season; it’s a movement that celebrates the spirit of Lagos and positions Nigeria on the global stage as a cultural powerhouse.
