Mudashiru Obasa, the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, arrived Abuja Sunday night, sources close to Aso Rock have revealed.
Obasa got to Abuja under the cover of the night which shielded him from the public as he continues frantic moves to secure confidence from Nigeria’s President, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
Obasa was removed by his colleagues a week ago in a very peaceful action that also saw other principal officers removed. The new Speaker, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, also dissolved all standing committees of the House immediately after she was sworn in to office.
Obasa, who was with some of his close colleagues and the suspended Clerk of the House, Olalekan Onafeko, in Atlanta, USA when the impeachment happened, had been seeking the attention of the President since the incident.
Sources said Obasa had to travel to the United Arab Emirates where Tinubu had an official engagement in a desperate move to see the President.
“His effort to see the President in the UAE failed and he had to return to Atlanta,” a source within the House of Assembly in Lagos said.
Our Abuja source noted that the Speaker’s arrival was devoid of the usual protocol accorded him by his security aides.
“He was alone. He came in alone with no security attaché.
“As we speak, he is in Abuja seeking the President’s face for a soft landing. He arrived on Sunday evening when everywhere was dark.
“He knows he cannot be returned as Speaker as the train has since left the station, but he does not want to be arrested by the EFCC or ICPC,” an Abuja source said.
It is yet to be confirmed if the President is now willing to see him. Earlier reports said the President had avoided him all the while.
Sources close to the removed Speaker said he was taking the impeachment in good fate as his lawyers have told him his removal is constitutional.
“The only issue he is battling right now is for the issue not to stretch to the anti-corruption agencies,” the source added.
