The building housing The News — a popular weekly magazine — and its parallel evening tabloid, P.M. News, was on Wednesday gutted by fire that began late in the evening. The inferno, which reportedly started at about 8.20 pm, completely destroyed the last floor of the four-storied building of the news medium’s Press House, located on 27 Acme Road, Agidingbi, Lagos.
Although it was confirmed that no life was lost to the raging fire, it also partially affected the third floor, which houses the company’s library and advertisement departments.
“The fire began from one of the offices rented to other companies as a result of an electrical fault,” a reporter with Independent Communications Network Limited, publishers of TheNews told Huhuonline anonymously, adding that “the situation would have easily been brought under control if the men of the Fire Service were on hand to put it out early enough.”
Officials of the Fire Service, it was learnt, arrived the scene of the tragedy more than an hour after the fire started even though the building is a walkable distance from the Fire Service office at Alausa, Ikeja.
As at the time of filing this report, the fire fighters were still battling to curtail the situation.
