A former Divisional Police Officer, Segun Fabunmi, who was dismissed from the Police Force for killing a Lagos resident during the fuel subsidy protest of January 2012, has been granted bail in the sum of N250 million by a Lagos High Court.
Fabunmi, the former Chief Superintendent of Police who allegedly shot and killed 27-year-old Adedamola Daramola, one of the protesters during the subsidy protest, is facing a seven-count charge of murder, attempted murder, and causing grievous bodily harm to the victim.
Apart from the bail bond, the judge, Olabisi Akinlade added that the accused must provide two sureties who must have landed properties in Lagos worth N100 million each, who are resident in the state and who have three years tax clearance payable to the Lagos State government. Also, one of them must be at the directorate level at any of the state or federal civil service.
Justice Akinlade dismissed Fabunmi’s plea that his track record during service with the Nigeria Police Force is enough to grant him bail. Rather the judge reminded the former DPO of the Yaya Abatan Police Station that he had been dismissed from the force. She adjourned the case till July 16 for trial.
Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile of the Ikeja High Court had earlier this year awarded four other victims of the former DPO’s gunshot N1 million each. Chizoba Odoh, 28; Joy Monday, 21; Abubakar Alimi, 41; Samuel Egbujor, 24; all sustained gunshot injuries from the police officer’s AK47 rifle on the same day he killed Daramola.
