Lawmaker representing Delta Central in the Senate, Pius Ewherido has died.

Ewherido, who died of stroke on Sunday evening in Abuja, was born on 4th May 1963 in Ughelli, Delta State. He attended Notre Dame College, Ozoro and Urhobo College, Effuruin, Delta State; after which he attended the University of Ife, stufding Philosophy. After his National Youth Service, Ewherido became a businessman in Warri. He also studied Law at the University of Benin and was later called to the Bar.

The former member of the Federal House of Representatives between May 1999 and May 2007 was elected Senator for Delta Central in April 2011 on the platform of the Democratic People’s Party (DPP).

Ewherido joined the United Nigerian Congress Party (UNCP) during the Nigerian Third Republic. In 1998, he joined the (PDP); and in April 1999, he was elected to represent the Ughelli South Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly.

He was appointed Deputy Speaker of the House when it convened in June 1999. From 15 May 2000 until 20 March 2001 he was leader of the Assembly. Ewherido was re-elected in April 2003, and was Deputy Speaker of the Assembly from May 2003 until May 2007.

Meanwhile, the Delta State Government on Sunday evening confirmed Ewherido’s death, saying he was 50 years old.

According to a statement from Comrade Ovuozourie S. Macaulay, Secretary to the State Government, the senator died at the National Hospital, Abuja, after a brief illness.

“The Government of Delta State wishes to commiserate with and express its deep condolences to the family at this trying moment,” the statement read.

“Government advises Deltans, particularly members of his constituency to remain calm. We pray that God grants his family, constituents and all of us, the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”
