Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Danladi Umar on Friday escaped death on the Keffi-Gitata Road in Nasarawa State, as his convoy was attacked by gunmen.
A shootout between his security aides and the gunmen led to the death of one of the assailants.
As the Federal Ministry of Information broke the news, a statement issued in Abuja by Ibraheem Al-Hassan, head of press and public relations of the tribunal said that security personnel attached to the chairman engaged the gunmen in a fierce exchange of gun fire, which led to the death of one of the bandits.
Other members of the gang escaped through the bush around the spot, with some of them sustaining various degrees of injury.
The statement said the chairman and members of his entourage were on their way to Bauchi for an official assignment when the incident occurred. The Code of Conduct Bureau did not record any casualty from the attack.
The statement noted that “there is the temptation for some politicians whose cases are pending before the judges to be mischievous, especially as the 2015 elections draw nearer.”
It commended the security details attached to the chairman for displaying a rare professional excellence by overpowering the bandits, further stressing the need to strengthen security around judges in the country, to mitigate recurrence of such incidents.
