There was tension in parts of Sokoto State on Saturday morning as some Muslim youths protested in large numbers against the arrest of those suspected to have killed a female student for alleged blasphemy.
Deborah Emmanuel, a 200-level female student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, was mobbed and beaten to death before her corpse set ablaze by her fellow students on the school’s premises on Thursday.
The Christian girl was accused of blasphemy in a voice note she dropped on her class’ WhatsApp platform, in which she was alleged to have blasphemed Prophet Muhammad.
The protesters on Saturday called on the State Government and the security agencies to immediately release those who have been arrested in connection with the killing.
They carried placards with various messages, including “Release our Muslim brothers”, Muslims Are Not Terrorists”, as they shouted “Allahu Akbar,” which means ‘God is great’.
