Nyesom Wike, the Governor of Rivers State, has given conditions under which he may consider partnering with the proponents of a consensus arrangement for a presidential candidate in the People’s Democratic Party.
Wike said he would accept a consensus if it is based on equity, justice, and fairness.
The governor, who has all along been opposed to the concept of a consensus candidate, alleged that those who have been pushing for a consensus candidate were not sincere. But in a major turnaround, Wike said he was ready to support whoever emerges as the presidential candidate of the party for the 2023 polls.
Wike made the declaration during a visit to Minna, the capital of Niger State on Saturday, to PDP delegates ahead of the main opposition party’s presidential primary.
Wike, who is also running for the party’s presidential ticket, explained that he had been a member of PDP since 1998 and that he had never left the party despite its turbulent season.
“I will agree on consensus if it is based on equity, justice, and fairness because as it is, those who are talking about consensus are not sincere and there is nothing like consensus in our constitution.
“Whoever emerges as the flagbearer, I will do whatever I can to ensure that the PDP wins the election,” he said.
