An attack by gunmen at a police checkpoint on Monday in Anambra State left two policemen dead.

The attackers also torched the operational vehicle of the policemen, in an attack that took place in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.

Sources say the checkpoint was located in the Idemili-Obosi Interchange on the Onitsha-Owerri Road, with about 10 policemen said to be manning the point.

The checkpoint was said to have led to a build-up of traffic on the busy road that leads to parts of the Southeast and South-South.

There have been calls for the police authorities to reduce the number of such checkpoints that dot the southeast roads, and which are now said to constitute an obstacle to the free flow of traffic in the region.

The traffic disruption has worsened in recent days with the annual traffic flow associated with people returning to the region to celebrate Christmas and New Year.

Three of the attackers were said to have been killed by the police in an exchange of fire that ensued.
