…after NDLEA found 64,000 cartridges in Onitsha shop
Officers and men of the Nigeria Customs Service at the Tin Can Island Command in Lagos have intercepted arms and ammunition hidden in a container.
While the owner of the container had claimed the consignment was made up of electronics, the Customs officials, on opening the container for physical examination, found it was stuffed with guns.
This comes two days after officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency discovered 64,000 pump action gun cartridges in a store located at Success Line, Marine modern market, Onitsha, Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra state.
The discovery of the cartridges in Onitsha on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, followed a tip-off on drugs and arms dealing in the area and led to the arrest of the owner of the shop, Donatus Onyemachi Igwebudu.
The arms discovery at Tin Can port happened on Friday, December 17, according to an official of the port.
The full content of the container was yet to be revealed, but it was expected that more arms and possibly ammunition would be discovered as a further examination is carried out.
Nigeria is currently experiencing its worst peace-time insecurity, with armed gangs roaming the countryside, the highways, kidnapping people for ransom.
