The Nigerian government on Wednesday approved a 20 percent salary increase for the Police, to take effect from January 2022.

The decision was taken at the virtual weekly Federal Executive Council Meeting which was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja.

The Minister of Police Affairs, Maigari Dingyadi, disclosed this to journalists at the end of the meeting.

He explained that the raise in the take-home pay of policemen was designed to improve the relationship between the office and men of the police and the Nigerian populace.

The Nigeria police is often seen as one for poorly remunerated government departments, and this low level of compensation is seen as the cause of the wrongdoings associated with the force.

In addition, the Council okayed an adjustment of duty tour allowance for the police as well as their shift allowance to six percent. The government also approved the release of N1.2b for the payment of uninsured benefits, and another N1.2b  to offset outstanding allowances.

The minister explained that this was in fulfillment of the promise by  Buhari to improve the pay for the police officers and men following the demands by the #EndSARS protesters in October last year.
