A Superintendent of Police was on Thursday shot dead while two others were injured in Lagos State amidst protests by commercial motorcyclists, who were being chased by law enforcement officers.

The police officer, identified as CSP Kazeem Abonde, was killed during a clash between policemen and motorcyclists in the Ajao Estate, in the Isolo area of Lagos State.

The incident is said to have occurred between 5 pm and 6 pm, as the policemen were trying to impound motorcycles of the cyclists, who resisted the move.

It was gathered that the policemen seized some of the motorcycles for alleged contravention of the state traffic law. This led to the motorcyclists mobilizing and attacking the police team.

It was reported that the rampaging cyclists allegedly disarmed the SP and used his service firearm to kill him along Asa Afariogun Road by the Redeemed Christian Church of God in the place.

The motorcyclists were also alleged to have damaged a patrol van that was being used by the police team.

They were also alleged to have marched towards a police station where they shot and injured two more police officers.

A task force of the state Environmental and Special Offences Unit is reported to have seized about 410 motorcycles for alleged contravention of the state’s traffic laws.

Places, where the seizures took place, included Isolo, Ojodu-Berger, Ojota, Lagos Island, Surulere, and Second Rainbow areas of the state, according to the agency.
