The Federal Government on Wednesday announced that the ban imposed on operations of Twitter will be lifted “in a matter of days”.
Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture, disclosed this in Abuja at the end of this week’s virtual Federal Executive Council meeting, which was presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa.
Nigeria banned Twitter’s operations in the country earlier this year, accusing the micro-blogging platform of engaging in acts capable of destabilizing the nation. Representatives of the government and Twitter have since been meeting as the two sides look for ways to resolve the logjam.
Mohammed said that Twitter’s team has accepted most of the conditions given for the lifting of the ban.
He said discussions were still continuing on some knotty areas, including the demand by the government for Twitter to open an office and also a Twitter staff of management cadre to serve as the country representative.
Also, while Twitter has accepted to open an office in Nigeria, Mohammed said the company noted that it would open such an office in 2022.
