MTN Nigeria, a unit of the South African telecom giant, on Tuesday, warned that its services could be disrupted by rising insecurity in different parts of the West African country.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, facing rising insecurity challenges, with insurgency in the northeast, kidnapping for ransom in most parts of the country. There are also clashes between cattle herders and farmers, which the government has warned could threaten food security in the country.

“Sadly, we must inform you that with the rising insecurity in different parts of Nigeria, service delivery to your organization may be impacted in the coming days,” MTN wrote in a note to customers.

“This means that in some cases, our technical support team may not be able to get to your site and achieve optimum turnaround time in fault management as quickly as possible.”

With this, MTN becomes the first company to admit that the escalating security challenges could impact negatively its services in Nigeria.

MTN Nigeria is listed on the local bourse and is under an obligation to inform its stakeholders of any material threats to its performance, according to the listing requirements of the local stock exchange.

The South African company has Nigeria’s largest mobile phone network, and is said to account for about a third of the group’s total revenue.
