Unidentified gunmen on Saturday attacked the country home of the governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State.

The attackers set ablaze Uzodinma’s house in his village, Omuma in the Oru East Local Government Area of the state, and also killed two security aides on duty at the palatial compound.

Videos on social media showed vehicles parked inside the compound as well as parts of the buildings on fire, as smoke billowed into the sky.

The body of one of the security men was lying on the floor.

One of the videos showed the gunmen, clad in black attires, at the entrance to the compound as they attacked the premises. One of them holds what looks like an AK-47 rifle. As he enters, he fires some shots and rushes out, and enters again.

Another is seen carrying a disused tyre, apparently to be used in setting the place on fire.

This is a new dimension to the series of attacks that have been recorded in the South East from February this year, with such attacks focused on Police and related security services facilities. This has seen many police stations and zonal and state headquarters set on fire by unidentified men.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack on Uzodinma’s house. In the previous cases, the Eastern Security Net, the military wing of the Indigenous People of Biafra, denied being responsible, although many people in the region point accusing figures on them.
