Armed men late Wednesday attacked Prof Charles Soludo, ex-Central Bank of Nigeria, and a contender for the All Progressives Grand Alliance Party’s ticket in the upcoming governorship election in Anambra State.
The attackers shot dead two policemen who were with Soludo.
“Prof Charles Chukwuma Soludo was some few minutes ago attacked by some gun men in his home community, Isuofia, at the Town Hall while having an interactive session with some members of the community,” Christian Aburime, one of his aides said in an emailed statement.
The statement said that after the attack Soludo’s whereabouts were unknown. A later update said he was safe.
“The Attack was said to be bloody,” Aburime said.
The mail showed the lifeless bodies of the two policemen lying on the flow at the scene of the attack, with blood gushing from their heads.
Anambra, in Southeast Nigeria, has witnessed a number of killings recently, including that of security officers.
Analysts say the attacks could intensify as politicians struggle for the governorship ticket.
Soludo was CBN governor from June 2004 to June 2009. He undertook the biggest banking-sector consolidation in Nigeria, which led to the number of banks shrinking from about 97 to 25, and the minimum capital base of banks raised to N25b from just N2b.
