President Muhammadu Buhari, who left for London on Tuesday on a medical trip did not transmit power to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo because he would be away for only a few days, presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu has explained.

Speaking on Channels Television’s programme, Politics Today, Shehu explained the Buhari would carry on with his duties from where he is at the moment.

Formally handing over power to Osinbajo by Buhari has been a knotty issue since in the  administration since it 2015 when it came into office.

“He will continue from wherever he is. The requirement of the law is that if the President is going to be absent in the country for 21 days and more, then that transmission is warranted. In this particular instance, it is not warranted,” Shehu said.

Shehu explained further that Buhari is hale and hearty, emphasising that he only travelled for medical check-up.

“It is a medical trip and there is absolutely no urgency, no emergency; the President is not in any sick condition.

“It is a routine medical check-up; the President has undertaken this with a set of doctors that he has retained over many years.”

Buhari’s failure to transmit power to his VP during one of his long medical trips gave rise to speculation and theories as to who was in charge of Nigerian affairs during that period.
