Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State on Tuesday suspended indefinitely all activities of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the state, after one person was killed as the crisis rocking the union escalated.

Two other people were shot as rival factions of the union attacked each other.

Akeredolu spoke through his Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties and strategy, Dr Doyin Odebowale, who also ordered NURTW members to immediately vacate all motor parks across the state.

The government’s decision was a sequel to the “unruly and uncultured behaviour of the union leaders which resulted in violent attacks on members and the innocent citizens,” Odebowale said.

The suspension did not affect the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) who comported themselves in a peaceful manner.

Tuesday’s decision followed the government’s order last week the suspending the activities of NURTW and RTEAN for two weeks to forestall an envisaged power tussle among the union leaders.
