Security cameras captured the shootings of #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki toll gate, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos State Governor,  has clarified.

The footage would be submitted to the judicial panel on police brutality, extra-judicial killings, and extortion set up by the state earlier this week, the governor assured.

The governor said this on a live program on ARISE TV on Thursday.

Sanwo-Olu  said this in response to a question on why the cameras capturing the protest were removed before the shootings of #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki toll gate.

“I will just speak up the truth on what actually happened. There is security personnel of The Lekki Concession Company on the ground. I had called the Managing Director that night when I saw the pictures. What he said to me is that because of the curfew that has been announced, they took a decision that they will take out installations that are critical to them. The camera that you saw is not a security camera or a motion camera. The camera is a laser camera for vehicles. It picks the tag on cars and number plates.

“It is not a camera for human beings. It is an infrared camera that just picks the tag on the vehicles. Security cameras for the plaza are still available. These are some of the footage that we are going to use for our investigation. Security cameras are installed on top of towers and they are there because I have seen them. Nobody can touch the security camera.

“These are things that we can leave open for citizens to come and verify when the panel of inquiries start. We will adopt this as evidence so that experts can come and review what kind of camera are those shown at the footage,” the governor explained.

Sanwo-Olu disclosed that the federal government has deployed more troops to Lagos to beef up security for lives and property after the ongoing protests were hijacked by hoodlums and criminals.

The governor explained that since the Lekki Tollgate shooting he had been unable to speak directly with  President Buhari; rather, he spoke with that the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Abayomi Olonisakin and the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai.

He said the two security chiefs asked to deploy more troops to secure public assets and help to maintain law and order in the state.

Hoodlums taking advantage of the protests have torched or vandalized shops, offices, houses and some other landmark assets.

Places attacked in Lagos include banks, local government secretariats, police stations, the Palace of the Oba of Lagos, Shoprite in Ajah and Surulere, Nigerian Ports Authority head office, the governor mother’s house at Akerele, VIO/Federal Road Safety Corps’ offices at Ojodu, magistrates’ courts at Igbosere, TVC station, the Nation Newspapers office, BRT station and buses and so many others have been burnt down in the last 48 hours.
