Former Senator Shehu Sani a social critic, has has warned the Nigerian Army to desist from intervening in the ongoing #ENDSARS protest.

Rather intervene in the protests, Sani advised the army to keep its officers and men busy by deploying them to the forests and bushes to fight  Boko Haram terrorists and other bandits who are currently killing and abducting Nigerians.

Sani’s warning followed a statement issued by the Army, in which it said that it would fold its hands and watch people it described as “subversive elements and trouble makers” take over the country.

The Army’s message was contained in a statement issued Thursday by its spokesman, Col. Sagir Musa, under the title, ‘Nigerian Army Remains Resolute to the Peace and Stability of the Nation’

“The Army should not and must not intervene to crush peaceful protesters. We have enough bandits and Insurgents in our forests and deserts that needs their attention”, Sani on his Twitter handle.

“The Nigerian Army (NA) wishes to reassure law-abiding citizens that it is highly committed to the sustenance of peace, security and defence of democracy in Nigeria.

“As a responsible and law-abiding organisation, the Nigerian Army reaffirms its unalloyed loyalty and commitment to the President, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari and the Constitution of the Country.

“The NA hereby warns all subversive elements and trouble makers to desist from such acts as it remains highly committed to defend the country and her democracy at all cost. “The NA is ready to fully support the civil authority in whatever capacity to maintain law and order and deal with any situation decisively.

“All officers and men are directed never to be distracted by anti-democratic forces and agents of disunity”, the statement read.

Nigeria currently faces its highest peace-time insecurity, as banditry, Boko Haram insurgency and other violent crimes have threatened daily survival of citizens. People are being kidnapped  killed and women raped in their dozens on a daily basis across the nation.

In some cases, full loads of passengers in buses are hijacked on highways, while communities are attacked and residents killed and some abducted for ransom.

The Army should not and must not intervene to crush peaceful protesters. We have enough bandits and Insurgents in our forests and deserts that needs their attention.
