Environmental activist Ken Saro Wiwa and the Ogoni-9; and before them, Major Isaac Adaka Boro lost their lives in the struggle for economic development and freedom in the Niger Delta. Sadly, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), which was created in response to the intense agitations that followed their death, has become Corruption Inc. as it has been hijacked by unscrupulous politicians who conspire with Niger Delta sons and daughters to brazenly steal funds meant for the development of their homeland; and denying their kith and kin the benefits of development, which the agency was created for. These vampire elites and their cronies simply collect funds for contracts and disappear without as much as visiting the site of the project. But after all is said and done, the unfolding NDDC saga is a tragedy of immense proportion that the nation has endured for decades. The fact that President Buhari has not acted in the wake of jaw-dropping revelations of sleaze and graft and monumental corruption is a dreadful mistake.
A trove of evidence and documents for Year 2018, obtained exclusively by Huhuonline.com provides harrowing details of fake contracts and fictitious payments; including the name of the politician who originated the project, the name of the contractor, the state and LGA, the date of award and the project cost. The trove of evidence disclose previously unknown dealings between the House Committee Chairman in charge of NDDC, Hon Olubumi Tunji-Ojo (who was forced to recuse himself from the NDDC investigation) and the 23 companies he demanded the NDDC to pay them before the House would harmonize the agency’s 2019 budget. It also detailed how Sen. Peter Nwaoboshi, Senate Committee Chairman on NDDC for five years, used shell companies and proxies to secure contracts that were never executed. Other accomplices include Sen. James Manager, Sen. Ararume, Sen. Matthew Urhogide and other elected officials conspired to steal the NDDC blind.
As we run these series of articles, this is a call to action for all stakeholders in the Niger Delta to show more than just a passing interest in the embattled agency. The indigenes should keep abreast of who initiated which project and which contractor was awarded which contracts and whether the contracts have been duly executed for which funds have been released. Rather than resort to base sentiments to defend corruption by making lame arguments that the looted funds belong to the Niger Delta people who see nothing wrong in their sons and daughters stealing funds assigned to develop the region, the people should have been on the streets protesting against the plundering of resources by their so-called representatives. The contractors with asterisk are proxies of Hon. Tunji-Ojo.
