Agboola Ajayi, the Ondo State deputy governor whose exit from the ruling All Progressives Congress caused quite a loud stir, has decamped from the People’s Democratic Party, which he joined in June.
Ajayi sent the letter of resignation from the party on Monday to the PDP secretariat at Apoi Ward 2 in Kiribo town, Ese Odo Local Government Area of the state.
But the PDP is not missing him, as the party has accused him of being ‘desperate’.
Ajayi, whose relationship with Rotimi Akeredolu was soured, joined the PDP just in time to participate in the party’s governorship election primary, having been given a waiver by the national leadership of the PDP.
He lost the ticked to Eyitayo Jegede, who emerged the party’s candidate for the election scheduled October.
Ajayi in his resignation letter thanked the PDP leadership for the acceptance accorded to him. He said however that his decision to leave was based on the call on him by his people, who want him to contest the governorship election.
However, the state PDP said the exit of Ajayi would not have any effect on the chance of the party in winning the governorship election. The party said the action of the deputy governor showed he was a desperate politician.
In its reaction to the development, the Ondo State chapter of the PDP has said that Ajayi’s departure will not affect the fortunes of the party in the forthcoming election in the state.
Kennedy Peretei, Publicity Secretary of the PDP in the state, said the party remained solid, strong, and more determined clinch the governorship seat.
“Agboola Ajayi has abused the welcome and privilege accorded him by our party supporters during his brief stay in the party”.
“He also proved that he is desperate to become the governor of Ondo State. In the days to come, it will dawn on him that, he has squandered whatever was remaining in his goodwill with this decision,” Peretei said in the statement.
“However, his exit from the PDP will not affect our prospects of winning the October Gubernatorial Elections. Peretei said that “The PDP remains solid, strong and more determined than ever before to win the forthcoming governorship elections with a credible and competent candidate in the person of Eyitayo Jegede, SAN” the statement concluded.
