The Census Tribunal presided over by Hon. Abraham N. Yisa (Chairman) and also comprising Hon. Mrs. Sylvia Shinaba (SAN) and Prof. Mustapha Duze on Thursday ordered the National Population Commission (NPC) to conduct fresh census in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.

In Complaint No. CTA/DELTA/02/22 BETWEEN CHIEF TUESDAY A. ONOGE, CHIEF ISAAC ITEKE (J.P) (for themselves and on behalf of Indigenes of Uvwie Local Government Council, Delta State) VS. NATIONAL POPULATION COMMISSION & Anor, the complainants took out a complaint against the NPC before the Honourable Tribunal on 2nd July 2009, wherein the census result of Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State as declared by the 1st Respondent was challenged.

According to the census result released by the NPC, the population of Uvwie Local Government Area is 188,728, which is a figure that was not accepted by the complainants and the entire people of Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.

The complainants called five witnesses to prove their case while the respondents called only one witness. At the end of the hearing, the tribunal ruled in favour of the complainants, declaring that the 2006 Census Final Results for Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State of Nigeria do not represent any realistic account of the actual population of Uvwie Local Government Area, and consequently issuing an order directing/compelling the respondent to conduct fresh census including demarcation of enumeration areas of the Uvwie Local Government Area in order to ascertain the actual population of the Area.
