Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai has confirmed that the deposed Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, has left Awe, Nasarawa State, where he was banished after his dethronement by the Kano State government. Sanusi had been under house arrest since Monday in Nasarawa State, after he was dethroned as Emir of Kano. He left town with El-Rufai who visited him on Friday and headed for Abuja, from where he will be flown to Lagos to be re-united with his family.

Sanusi left Awe after Justice Anwuli Chikere of the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court ordered Sanusi’s release from detention. The Kano State Government on Monday removed Sanusi as emir of the Kano emirate after six years on the throne. The Secretary to the state government Usman Alhaji said the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor was removed for his “total disrespect to lawful instructions from the office of the governor and other lawful authorities.” Kano State Government announced Aminu Ado Bayero as the new emir of Kano emirate.

El-Rufai has since the dethronement given two appointments of Kaduna State Government to Sanusi.
On Tuesday, March 11 2020, El-Rufai appointed the former emir into the board of Kaduna State Investment Promotion Authority. In less than twenty-four hours, the Kaduna State governor named Sanusi II as the chancellor of Kaduna State University. “On behalf of the government and people of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai is delighted to appoint His Highness, Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Chancellor of the Kaduna State University,” El-Rufai’s spokesman Muyiwa Adekeye said in a statement. “In public life, His Highness has demonstrated a strong commitment to education.”

“The Kaduna State Government has no doubt that as Chancellor, His Highness Muhammadu Sanusi, would provide symbolic and substantive leadership in raising the profile of KASU as an emerging centre of learning on the national and global level.” El-Rufai said Sanusi’s appointment came at an exciting moment for the university’s transition to a multi-campus structure with presence across the state. The governor said the state government was grateful that Sanusi continues to support and assist the realisation of its governance objectives.

Meanwhile, Sanusi is expected to chair the Lagos State University (LASU) convocation slated for March 26, according to the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun. The convocation lecture titled, ‘The Future of Developing Economies in a Digital World’ will be delivered by the President, African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), Professor Benedict Okey. Fagbohun said the institution would graduate a total of 8,959 graduates with 76 bagging First class in various faculties of the institution which is the highest in its history.

The 2018/2019 academic session which kicks-off with a convocation cup competition for staff on March 20, will witness some infrastructure/street naming ceremony after individuals who had contributed immensely to LASU. They include: Deji Femi -Pearse, Akin Kekere- Ekun, Bode Augusto, Akibo Savage and Isiaka Ishola Oluwa. Others are; Kehinde Williams, Omotayo Seriki, J.K Randle and Adebayo Ninalowo. He added that some buildings will also be named after its former Vice Chancellors including; Akanni Hussein Radiation Centre and Abisogun Leigh Main Science buildings which holds on March 23.
