Former governor of Delta State who was convicted for criminal charges abroad, Chief James Ibori has been released from prison.
His release was communicated by his media aide, Mr. Tony Elumenor. Eluemunor said that the erstwhile Governor was released a few minutes past noon upon a court order.
Ibori was sentenced by a United Kingdom court to prison for 13 years and served out his 6 1/2 years term midnight yesterday.
However, the Home Office in London, has sought block his release,arguing that his assets confiscation hearing remained inconclusive.
Delivering her judgment, Wednesday, Mrs. Justice May, who heard an emergency appeal filed by Ibori to enforce his fundamental human right, refused the Home Office’s request to further hold Mr. Ibori in prison and ordered his immediate release without conditions.
Mr. Ibori, will remain in London, and will be staying at his St. John’s Wood residence. He is required to report to the police once weekly, until his next court hearing in January 2016.
Sources close to James Ibori, told Huhuonline.com that the former governor is apprehensive about returning to Nigeria, because he may be prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC)
