In order to challenge the $3.9 billion fine slamed on them by Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for failing to disconnect unregistered users, MTN Group has hired a former United States Attorney, General, Eric Holder.
According to sources close to the organisation, the Attorney pleaded with NCC officials last month on behalf of MTN.
The fine of $5.2 billion was slammed on MTN, Africa’s largest mobile phone company in October 2015.
The company immediately began lobbying thereafter until the fine was reduced to $3.9 billion.
However the telecoms company was still not satisfied with the reduction, leading it to launched a court challenge in December.
The company is claiming that NCC had no legal grounds to order the penalty.
In January, a Lagos court gave MTN until 18th March to reach a settlement on the fine, which equates to more than twice MTN’s annual average capital spending over the past five years.
Attempts to reach the company’s spokesman, Chris Maroleng for comments on the new development have not been successful.
