The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) on Wednesday clarified earlier reports that the United Kingdom deported 500 Nigerians earlier in the day, saying only 48 Nigerians were deported.
The deportees were dropped off at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos by a chattered aircraft.
The British Broadcasting Corporation had claimed that about 500 Nigerian deportees were flown from the UK and that they had landed at the Nigerian airport.
Spokesperson of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Ekpedeme King, explained that the figure was exaggerated, adding that some of the deportees had overstayed their visa in the UK.
Recall that the UK had earlier made its intention known to deport 29,000 Nigerians and this resulted in queries by the Nigerian government which insisted on due process on the action.
