A twin explosion has occurred at the popular GSM market in Kano killing eleven people and injuring sixty six others.
The explosions occurred early Wednesday evening while business was still at its peak.
One of the explosions occurred at the entrance to the market while the second one occurred in the centre of the market, according to witnesses
The twin explosions were reportedly caused by two suicide bombers who found their way to the market barely 24 hours after an explosion had killed up to 34 in Yola, Adamawa State.
It was learnt from the witnesses that the teenage girl who detonated her bomb just at the entrance to the market was initially prevented from gaining entrance into the market.
Confirming the incident, the Police Commissioner in Kano State, Muhammadu Katsina, said two female suicide bombers were involved adding that so far, he understands that only three people were killed.
In a quick reaction, President Muhammadu Buhari has called for increased vigilance among the civilian population to help ward off suicide terror attacks on soft targets around the country.
According to Senior Special Assistant to the President, Shehu Garba, the President condemned in strongest terms the barbaric suicide terrorist attacks.
“The President extends his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims as well as to the Government and people of Adamawa and Kano States respectively,” Shehu said.
“President Buhari reassures Nigerians that his administration is very much determined to wipe out Boko Haram in Nigeria and bring all perpetrators of these heinous crime against humanity to justice.”
He urged all Nigerians not to despair in the face of cowardly terrorist attacks but to have confidence in the ability of Nigeria’s reinvigorated, well-equipped and well-motivated Armed Forces and security agencies to overcome Boko Haram very soon.
He expressed belief that vigilance is a potential life saver, since security agents cannot be everywhere to deter every planned attack.
“Citizen’s vigilance will help to reduce the frequency of such attacks,” he said.
