Nigeria’s Supreme Court on Thursday morning suspended further proceedings in the trial of Senate President Bukola Saraki at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).

The halting of the trial is to enable the court conclude on the appeal filed before the court by Saraki.

The Senate President is facing trial at the CCT for allegedly under-declaring his assets as governor of Kwara State.

Leading a five-man judicial panel, Justice John Fabiyi, made the declaration, but this was after Saraki’s lead counsel, Mr. Joseph Daudu (SAN), had argued his client’s motion for stay of the CCT’s proceedings and Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), counsel to the Federal Government, had asked the court to give an undertaking that Saraki’s main appeal would be given an accelerated hearing.

The judges all agreed that further trial should be suspended till the determination of Saraki’s trial, while asking Jacobs to file his respondents’ brief within seven days. Daudu was ordered to file further response to Jacobs’ brief if he wants within the same period.
