Mohammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s President -elect has always had a flair for doing things differently – but his unplanned visit to London may set a new standard.
The President-elect embarked on an unplanned visit to London, but, most of. his close aides and political associates who were with him till 8pm on Thursday, became aware of his trip from news feeds.
The trip has led to either outright cancellation or rescheduling of items on his Friday itinerary. However, replacement was quickly sought for events that he was supposed to personally attend.
For instance, former vice president Abubakar Atiku had to represent the President-elect at the inauguration prayer service at the National Mosque.
Clearing up the President-elect’s surprise and unplanned visit to London, Shehu Garba, in a belated media advisory issued hours after his arrival in London, said: “The President-elect Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, 22 May left for Britain on a private visit, his first such trip outside the country since winning the March 28th presidential election.”
“General Muhammadu Buhari will use the opportunity of the visit to take a much-deserved rest ahead of his inauguration on May 29th.
“He is expected back in the country a few days before the inauguration, refreshed and ready to hit the ground running once he is sworn into office.”
