Senate Joint Committees on Petroleum Resources, which include the Upstream and Downstream, on Friday summoned the Coordinating Minister for the Nigerian Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, as well as the Petroleum Minister, Mrs. Deziani Allison-Madueke, to appear on Monday and answer queries concerning the lingering fuel scarcity in the country.
Since after the 2015 general elections, Nigeria has faced acute fuel shortage with many filling stations shutting down for many weeks now.
Even filling stations owned by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) have not sold petroleum products despite claims by the corporation that it has a stock of petroleum products.
The only few filling stations where premium motor spirit (also called petrol) is available, it sells for between N150 and N200 per litre as against the normal N87 per litre.
The situation has been made worse by the poor power supply that is currently plaguing the country.
To appear with the ministers at the senate on Monday, according to a statement from the joint committee, are the Group Managing Director of NNPC, the Managing Director of Petroleum Pricing and Regulatory Agency and the Director of the Department of Petroleum Resources.
The statement signed by the Chairmen of the two committees, Senators Emmanuel Paulker (Upstream) and Magnus Abe (Downstream), also summoned representatives of the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria; Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria and the National Association of Road Transport Owners to appear by 10am same day.
The statement said the two committees were acting on behalf of the senate which mandated them to investigate the crisis.
According to the statement, the Deputy Senate Majority Leader, Senator Abdul Ningi, raised a motion at the floor of the senate on Thursday to draw the attention of his colleagues to the major challenge in the country and the untold hardship on Nigerians.
The findings of the committees are to be submitted to the senate on Tuesday as the committees said it was necessary for those invited to appear to enable the senate have adequate information to work with.
