In a nation where true public service is often overshadowed by self-interest, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai stands as a beacon of principled leadership, unwavering conviction, and fearless dedication to the Nigerian project. As he marks his 65th birthday, it is only fitting to pay tribute to a man whose life has been defined by service, reform, and an unyielding pursuit of progress. Born on February 16, 1960, El-Rufai’s journey of excellence began at Barewa College, where he graduated at the top of his class in 1976, earning the “Barewa Old Boys’ Association Academic Achievement” Trophy. He furthered his education at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Quantity Surveying with first-class honors. His thirst for knowledge led him to pursue a Master of Business Administration and later, after his initial public service tenure, a law degree and a Master’s in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
Transformative Leadership
In November 1999, President Olusegun Obasanjo appointed El-Rufai as the inaugural Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) and Secretary of the National Council of Privatization. In this role, he spearheaded the privatization of several government-owned corporations, showcasing a clear commitment to economic reform and transparency. His tenure at BPE was marked by significant strides in reducing government overreach in business, setting the stage for a more robust private sector.
From 2003 to 2007, as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), El-Rufai undertook the formidable task of restoring Abuja’s master plan. His tenure was characterized by bold decisions, including the reclamation of public lands and the demolition of illegal structures, actions that, while controversial, underscored his commitment to orderliness and urban planning.
El-Rufai’s dedication to public service culminated in his election as the Governor of Kaduna State in 2015, a position he held for two terms until 2023. His administration focused on infrastructural development, educational reforms, and enhancing security. Notably, he implemented policies aimed at improving primary education and overhauling the state’s public service, reflecting his belief in building a foundation for sustainable development.
A Legacy of Courage and Integrity
From his tenure as FCT Minister, where he fearlessly took on entrenched interests to restore Abuja’s master plan, to his time as Governor of Kaduna State, where he introduced sweeping reforms in governance, security, and education, El-Rufai has always led with vision and courage. He is one of the rare few who entered politics for the right reasons—genuine transformation and the betterment of the people. Beyond his political roles, El-Rufai is a man of deep intellect, integrity, and resilience. He is a very vocal advocate for democracy and good governance. Even in the face of adversity, he remains steadfast, refusing to be silenced by intimidation. His recent defiance against political machinations is a testament to his indomitable spirit and commitment to truth. For him, silence has never been golden, and inaction is never an option. He stands firm in his convictions, never seeking refuge in exile but choosing to confront challenges head-on.
President Bola Tinubu, in his congratulatory message, commended El-Rufai’s “endeavours for democracy; his meritorious service to the nation, and mentorship of the younger generation.” The President, in a release issued on Sunday by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga,
acknowledged Mallam El-Rufai’s role in the dialogues leading up to the formation of the APC and his contributions to the success of the party in the three consecutive elections of 2015, 2019, and 2023.
The President wished El-Rufai good health and strength for continuous service to the nation. Such accolades reflect the high esteem in which El-Rufai is held by peers and the public alike.
As Nasir El-Rufai celebrates this milestone, Nigeria is undoubtedly richer for his contributions. His legacy of reform, fearless leadership, and unwavering commitment to truth and progress will continue to inspire generations to come. Here’s to a leader who refuses to bow to fear, a statesman whose impact will be remembered for years to come.
Happy 65th birthday, Malam Nasir El-Rufai! May your journey of impactful service continue to illuminate the path for others, and may you continue to stand tall in the service of Nigeria.
