Lt.-Gen. Jeremiah Useni, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, is dead.
Useni, who until the death of former Head of State, Sani Abacha in 1998, was the most senior military officer, died on Thursday at the age of 82, after a protracted illness.
Though the nature of the illness is yet to be known, his death was announced by the Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, through his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere.
Governor Mutfwang, who said Useni’s passing was a huge loss to the State and Nigeria, recalled the deceased’s roles in shaping Nigeria including hjs exemplary leadership, commitment to service, and tireless efforts to promote peace and security, particularly in Northern Nigeria and Plateau State.
“The Executive Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, deeply regrets to announce to the citizens of Plateau State and all patriotic Nigerians, the passing of the former minister.
“Governor Mutfwang recounted the illustrious career of the late General, who served Nigeria with distinction in various capacities, including as Minister of Transport, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, and Minister of the FCT,” the Governor said.
The Governor recalled that Useni, after his retirement from the military, moved to politics and served as the Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). He was later elected a Senator for Plateau South Senatorial District in 2015 under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
“On behalf of my family, the government, and the peace-loving people of Plateau State, I extend my deepest sympathies to the President, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the immediate family, and all those mourning the loss of this distinguished elder statesman,” Governor Mutfwang said while praying to God to grant the family the fortitude to bear the loss.
