Nigeria’s electricity supply collapsed late on Sunday, the fifth this year when the country’s national electricity grid crashed to zero.
The collapse occurred at about 18:49 hours on Sunday, being the culmination of a decline in power generation from the various power plants in the country. This led to a widespread blackout across the country. The last time this occurred was on April 8, this year.
Nigeria’s power generation has been declining in recent times, falling below 5,000MW for the whole country.
By 18:00 hours on Sunday, June 12, 2022, total power generation in the country had fallen to 1,353.80 megawatts, according to official figures. This was generated by 13 Generating Companies. This was the level of power supply in the country just before the collapse took place.
On Saturday, a day before the collapse, the highest level of power generation was 3,685MW, and according to records, that was the highest power generated in the country since Sunday, June 5.
Following the Sunday crash, many parts of Nigeria were thrown into darkness. The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc announced that the crash had thrown the five states under the Disco’s franchise area in total blackout.
“The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc wishes to inform her esteemed customers of a system collapse which occurred at 6.49pm this evening, Sunday, June 12, 2022,” the EEDC said in a statement issued by its Corporate Affairs Manager, Emeka Ezeh.
“As a result of this development, all our outgoing feeders are out and this has affected supply to our customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states.
“We are on standby, awaiting further information on the restoration of supply from the National Control Centre. Thank you.”
