Former Anambra State governor, Willie Obiano, who was arrested on his last day in office by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, have been granted an administrative bail, the agency has said.
The Chairman of the anti-graft commission, Abdulrasheed Bawa, disclosed this in Abuja on Monday.
EFCC operatives arrested Obiano last Thursday, as he tried to board a United States-bound flight at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. Obiano was on his way out of the country a few hours after handing over the reins of power to Prof Charles Soludo, the new governor of Anambra State.
The governor has remained on EFCC’s custody in Abuja, where he was flown to from Lagos.
Bawa told journalists on the sideline of the 5th Annual General Assembly meeting of the Network of National Anti-Corruption Institutions in West Africa in Abuja on Monday, Bawa said the former governor was yet to perfect his bail processes.
There have been allegations from Obiono’s party – the All Progressives Grand Alliance – and supporters that his arrest smacked of political witch hunt, but the EFCC boss dismissed the insinuation.
““Nothing political about the arrest of the former Anambra State Governor, Wille Obiano. He has been granted bail,” he said
“There is nothing political about the investigation. You know what the EFCC stands for. “We investigate crimes, we look at people that have committed crimes and we link it up together and then we go to court,” Bawa said.
